AN UNAPOLOGETIC FUTURE FOR GAS IN AFRICA
Thank you, Programme Director, for your kind introductions.
Good morning honourable ministers, distinguished guests and colleagues and a special and warm welcome to those who come from other countries. I trust you are enjoying our great hospitality.
We meet at a time of great global upheaval driven by major events:
the Russian war on Ukraine;
rising global inflation and interest rates;
tumultuous energy markets that threaten economic productivity;
and more recently, the increasing conflict in the Middle East.
As South Africans, we stand in solidarity with all those affected by the atrocities of war.
We also meet today under the banner of a question that hangs heavily over Africa’s energy future: will gas be our salvation? Or our demise?
